The Mayor’s Picnic in Harvard Yard is August 4th!

The Cambridge Senior Picnic will take place on Wednesday, August 4th from 11:00am – 2:00pm in Harvard Yard. This event, sponsored by the Mayor and the Harvard University President, is a very festive occasion including great camaraderie, delicious picnic fare, giveaways, music and singing.
It has been a long-standing tradition in our city and a “must attend” destination for Cadbury Residents over the years. Youngsters from Cambridge Youth Volunteers donate their time and energy to serve the meals and beverages and there are many opportunities to meet and chat with numerous local and state politicians during this event.

Cadbury Commons will provide two shuttle trips to and from Harvard Yard to facilitate your participation in the Senior Picnic. We have reserved two tables of ten so up to twenty residents are welcome to sign up for the Picnic. It is a good idea to bring a sun hat or cap and sunscreen, but we will also try to seek out tables that are under the trees (for shade).

Oh, yes, don’t forget to bring your appetite for food and fun! You are welcome to sign up (first come, first served) by letting our Receptionist know of your wish to reserve a seat at the table. You will not want to miss this opportunity for a most enjoyable afternoon.

Community Programs

by Marie Curcio

Our Cadbury Commons Community Enrichment calendar continues to include the wide variety of quality programs and events developed over the years. There is, however, a renewed dimension to our calendar planning that is invisible to the Calendar reader. At least once (and more often twice) a month, Cadbury residents gather to review and discuss the merits the programs/events of previous weeks. Following considerable discussion, Committee then decides about the timing and/or inclusion or omission of future programs/events. We have come to appreciate this as an opportunity to “fine tune” the enrichment programs to the prevailing interests and needs of our residents. We have doubled the number of our fitness classes each month in response to resident choice!

We recognize that our Cadbury Independent and Assisted Living Community residents mirror the varying abilities and interests of seniors in the greater community at large and our monthly calendar of events must reflect this wide range of interests and abilities. Indeed, more and more, we find ourselves scheduling concurrent programming so that we may serve a greater number of our Cadbury Community residents in a given day. In any one month, for example, one hour of one day might offer residents an opportunity to take advantage of a program to “Maintain Your Brain”, a Classical Music Appreciation Hour or a Coastal Drive. On another day an hour might include concurrent programs such as a “Great Courses” Lecture and Study Group about the Islam Religion, a Swing Dance Group and Garden Planning. Some of our residents enjoy trips to local museums, lectures, concerts and conferences while others find pleasure in the offerings right here at Cadbury.

Abilities and interests vary. Our Enrichment Programs reflect this. We have in place a process for assuring that the Enrichment Program planning at Cadbury Commons is a participatory process– A Calendar Planning Committee. It is open to all residents and, while the committee members might not always be in agreement, each member respects the effort put forth by the participants to assure that the varied interests, needs and choices of our community residents are acknowledged and honored to the best of our ability.

Bring it On!

Those of you who can handle the heat may want to cheer on Chef Jason Santos when he appears on the television show Hell’s Kitchen this summer. (Tuesdays at 8 p.m. beginning June 1 on the Fox network.). For the uninitiated, this reality competition series takes place in celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen where a new set of food professionals will face off against each other to win the approval of the Satan of chefs, Gordon Ramsay himself. You may recall that Jason Santos also happens to be the Executive Chef at Gargoyles’ On the Square, close by in Somerville, as well as a former Cadbury Commons chef and—still and always—Business Director Judy Capone’s son! With all the interesting Cadbury Commons’ menu choices inspired by Jason’s assistance this past year, it may be a safe bet to say he will have Cadbury Commons’ folks in his corner.

Coming Full Circle

Angela Andrikopoulos says she was just an “ordinary kid” when she took up the cello as a fifth grader in a public school orchestra program. But when she draws the bow across the strings and the instrument responds, it is anything but ordinary. Angela, a graduate student at the Longy School of Music, is the recipient of the Pappenheimer Scholarship, funded by Cadbury Commons Residents, the late John and Hylie Pappenheimer.

Last month, Angela played at Cadbury, along with fellow Longy School students Jenna Potts and Fan Fan on violin and piano. Shortly, Angela will return home to Billings, Montana for the summer. Next year, she will return to Longy for her final year, and after that, we predict she will be going places!

From Morningside

by Marie Curcio

Morningside residents enjoyed a visit to the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, courtesy of the Artz program last month. We were treated to a viewing of scenes from such classic movies as Casablanca, Oklahoma, Singin’ in the Rain and The Sound of Music to name but a few of the twenty film clips. Specially trained Artz facilitators guided a lively discussion following each film clip.

This wonderful experience led us down memory lane, including positive remembrances of significant times past, and lots of laughter. Everyone agreed that the moments of joy created by this experience warmed the heart. The complimentary popcorn and sodas were just the “cream in our coffee.” Look for future Artz events on our Morningside calendar.

From the Director of Hospitality

by Barbara Booras

This past month, Dining Room Supervisor, Ethan Morgan, and I had the exciting opportunity to visit the Everett Senior Center for some outreach. Together, Ethan and I prepared a diabetic friendly three course meal with a Mediterranean theme. The menu included Roasted Eggplant Dip with Whole Wheat Pita Chips, Halibut with Couscous and a Warm Mediterranean Salad and, lastly, Dark Chocolate and Mint Frozen Yogurt. This one-hour cooking demonstration or “demo” was performed in front of a live audience of local seniors who are members of a Diabetic Support Group. When developing the recipes for the demo, we did our best to use little salt and fat in our recipes. If we did incorporate those elements, they were used sparingly.

“It was a rewarding experience, giving back to the community and sharing healthy and delicious recipes” said Ethan Morgan. “Seeing the seniors enjoy our demo so much, makes me eager and excited to do similar outreach in the near future.” This group of seniors was inquisitive and interactive. Although, only a few in the audience actually had diabetes, others were either connected with someone with the disease or looking to learn more healthy cooking methods. A diabetic diet happens to be a healthy diet for everyone, with or without diabetes.

Back at Cadbury Commons, more diabetic and heart healthy menu options will be incorporated on the upcoming and much-anticipated summer menu cycle, Healthy cooking methods such as steaming and grilling will be used more frequently and green vegetables will become a daily staple. Along with those changes, Residents can expect to see more fresh fruit as part of the dessert options. Poached pears, fruit and yogurt parfaits, dark chocolate dipped strawberries, mixed berry smoothies, orange and apple slices will be some of the new features. By incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables, the new menu cycle will create a more balanced heart-healthy dining experience.

If you are interested in hosting your own cooking demonstration with Ethan Morgan and Barbara Booras, contact us at Bbooras@gmail.com or 617.868.0575.
